THE PIT
FIRST UKRAINIAN YOUTH THRILLER!
In theatres - Spring-2006

Tagline: Again, the thrilling news from Ukraine.

Five students of the university▓s historical department set out for an archaeological internship under the direction of their professor. Accidentally they come across an enigmatic cave, where probably an idol of pagan god Perun is concealed. Suddenly, the professor disappears. Students decide to go deep into the pit hoping to find both the idol and the professor. First, they consider the pit an amusing place but only until they loose its map. The pit which all of them liked very much ceases to be just an interesting and safe labyrinth with lots of secret passages and dark corridors. The death of one of the interns makes them understand that the jokes are over. Something horrible is hidden in the dark. Searching the way out, they come to a conclusion: the pit conceals something in its dark bottoms that▓s dooming them to death. It materializes their fears and fades the boundaries of real and unreal away. The students fall into a trap of something beyond their understanding. Only the couple of loving hearts manage to reveal a secret of the pit, exterminate the evil and find the way out.

The film contains 11 short novels about the underground points of interest of the Ukrainian capital.

Imagine several cameras moving from Kiev outskirts to downtown, filming the most interesting moments of urban life in different parts of Kiev. The main characters of the movie are its viewers - every day they get into various situations and solve various problems; but the leading part in the picture belongs to Kiev itself. Urban tendencies, tastes, prices, priorities, routes, labor and housing market, present - past - future - altogether it forms canvas of "The Guidebook". Philosophical aspect of the movie can be determined as "search for the heart of the city" - a place or a composition of components that makes Kiev a European capital and makes it different from other cities of the world. "The Guidebook" is not
just a movie for aesthetical amusement; it's a chance to get the most important and interesting information about the city in a short time.

The film was made by request of "1+1" TV-channel. Presentation on Berlinale supported by Ministry of Culture and Arts of Ukraine.
